Santarama Miniland

Santarama Miniland

Photo 7 the 2016 Collection

I love the derelict because it makes for good photography, but today I found myself ashamed of the derelict, I found myself shameful of being South African.
You may think it is the politics of the last few days and you would be wrong in many ways.
I was organizing a photo-walk with a challenge, 50mm shallow depth of field, I wanted everyone to have an opportunity to get it right with little effort so the rest was up to creativity.
What a better place to do such a walk than a miniland full of historical building models?
This is a tourist attraction on the famed red bus tour after all, though I was told that it had gone down I thought of it as it need a coat of pain, was I wrong!
The pace is a mess, it has not been maintained in so long it is literally falling apart, with an non-refundable entrance fee of R35 it is grand theft, no less.
Johannesburg Tourism owe to look into this and Santarama should just close it or refurbish it.
It is a petty because it is a good concept.
This is one of the better looking models.

Bee Harvest

Bee Harvest

Photo 4 the 2016 Collection

I have been trying to get a bee in flight for about 4 days now, luckily I do not have to travel past my garden.
I found that Macro lenses are not good for this, they are too short and the depth of field is just not working out unless I put the ring flash. Imagine a bee being blasted by a ring flash! Poor bee…
So I changed my tactics, and dusted off my 100-400mm to eventually, with an enormous amount of patience and self control, catch this.
A little blur but very acceptable don’t you think?

Grey Lourie (Corythaixoides concolor)

Photo 3 the 2016 Collection

Here is the most unimpressed and aptly named “grey go-away-bird” or better known as the “grey lourie” (Corythaixoides concolor) I ever had the chance to shoot.
This particular bird has recently appeared, far more prominent in the past 2 years, in my back yard. Though very noisy, a welcome addition.

On another note, I am getting to grips with the Canon EOS 70D, the focusing system seems a little different to what I am used to, add to that the fact I had not shot in a long while and you have a bunch of silly mistakes.

Brown Veined White Butterfly (Belenois aurota)

Photo 2 the 2016 Collection

As a great many living on the South African highveld (or high plateau), I often move to my patio to enjoy the fresh air.
My house is located in the south part of Johannesburg near a natural reserve and that means there is a buzzing wildlife around me.
I see from the 2 legged to the 8, from insects to reptiles going past birds and mammals, all day long every day.
There are no large predators, I live in a built up area after all, but buzzing never the less.
I will be posting some of these creatures in a new category “From my Garden
Today’s is the commonly seen “brown veined white butterfly” (Belenois aurota).

Ducks on a pond

Ducks on a pond

Photo 1 the 2016 Collection

It has been months since I posted anything, I was working on a large project and it took all my time, working and spare.
My contract has now ended, the project has a life of its own and I have some time off. Well not quiet that simple as I am looking for the next job now but it is quieter.
If you are wondering what I was doing go here Minibus taxi industry pilots card payments. My team built the cash to card switch and the Point-of-Sale software on top of the custom built device developed by the company I was working for.
I am proud of the final package the team put together, it has now taken a life of its own and no longer needs me, my job is done.

Onto today’s photo, fellow Joburg Photowalker Sandor Oroszi thought it was about time for us to do a Lensbaby photowalk, so we did.
Next few photos, I will post are going to be Lensbaby or as I call it, the art of purposely degrading a perfectly good sensor…
